SABC News

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC)  runs a skills development internship program every year. As a news intern at the SABC, I collect and disseminate news on a daily basis. As a news intern I am required to produce news coverage which is then broadcast via local radio stations and television news channels.

INTRO: Various Western Cape universities are expected to resume their academic activities today. The institutions were closed about two weeks ago following violent student protests linked to the Fees-Must-Fall Campaign. Classes and exams have been rescheduled to make up for lost time. Violents students protests continued at the University of the Western Cape this past weekend forcing management to seek a court interdict. Cindy Archillies reports.....

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

FOCUS: Western Cape Universities to resume academic activities today.

 

INTRO: Various Western Cape universities were expected to resume their academic activities. The institutions were closed about two weeks ago following violent student protests linked to the Fees-Must-Fall Campaign. Classes and exams have been rescheduled to make up for lost time. Cindy Archillies reports.....

FOCUS: A police officer has been stabbed to death on the N2 while on his way to work.  

 

INTRO: Western Cape police are searching for two suspects in connection with the fatal stabbing of a police officer on the N2 near Maccassar in Cape Town. It is believed the officer had stopped to change a tyre when he was attacked this morning. Cindy Archillies reports... 

FOCUS: A pyramid scheme has been exposed in Parow. Assets of nearly 138 million rand has been seized. 

 

INTRO:  A curator has been appointed to investigate a pyramid scheme that has been discovered at Parow in Cape Town. The Asset Forfeiture Unit has obtained a court order to seize assets worth about 138- million rand. Cindy Archillies reports... 

 

FOCUS: Funeral service of Warrant Officer Petrus Holz  in Somerset West. 

 

INTRO: Western Cape policeman, Petrus Holz, has been laid to rest in an emotional funeral attended by the police's top brass in Somerset West. National police minister, Nathi Nhleko, and his deputy were among the mourners. 50-year-old Holz was fatally stabbed on the N2 near Macassar last week.  Cindy Archillies reports...

FOCUS: An inter- governmental dispute has been launched over the management of the 12 fishing harbours in the province. 

 

INTRO: The Western Cape government has initiated an inter- governmental dispute with National Government over the management of 12 fishing harbours in the province. Speaking to the local fishing community and the media at Kalk Bay (near muizenberg), premier Helen Zille said that harbours should be hives of activity and job creation. Cindy Archillies reports... 

FOCUS: A spike in crime on trains in Cape Town has raised concerns amongst commuters.

 

INTRO: Train commuters in Cape Town  are concerned about an escalation in crime on trains in the last few of months. Commuters say inadequate security in carriages has left them at the mercy of criminals. Cindy Archillies reports ...

FOCUS: South Africa crowns a new boerewors champion. The annual Championship Boerewors Competition Winner is announced in Greenpoint.


INTRO: South Africa has a new boerewors champion. Pretoria resident, George Baloyi, beat many hopefuls for the coveted title in Cape Town. His recipe was chosen as the winner from a group of three finalists selected by a panel of expert judges from the South African Chef's Association. Baloyi's big win comes amid celebrations for heritage month. Cindy Archillies reports...... 

FOCUS: Six months after an extensive wildfire on the Peninsula, the burnt areas in Silvermine and Cape Point have almost fully recovered. Exclusive walk through the closed off area.

 

INTRO: The fynbos in the fire-ravaged Table Mountain National Park has made a remarkable recovery. Today marks six months since one of the biggest veld fires in the Peninsula.  It raged for a week and caused extensive damage in the Silvermine area and Cape Point in the Table Mountain National Park.  Cindy Archilies reports…

FOCUS: ANC National Chairperson Baleka Mbete delivers the Freedom Charter Forum Lecture in Stellenbosch 


INTRO: The ANC in the Western Cape says the use of the Afrikaans language at tertiary institutions in the country should not be used to exclude other ethnic groups. ANC Provincial Chairperson, Marius Fransman, says while the party will defend the use of the language, it should not be forced upon all people. Cindy Archillies reports.......

FOCUS:Police are monitoring the situation at Masiphumelele Informal Settlement near Fish Hoek after two people were murdered last night in alleged vigilante killings.


INTRO : The situation remains tense at the Masiphumelele informal settlement near Fish Hoek in the Cape Peninsula following a night of violence. Three people were killed and s police vehicle torched. Cindy Archillies reports...

FOCUS: Pro-palestinian group, the BDS movement, protest outside the outside the Pharrell Williams concert. BDS has criticised Woolworths for trading with Israel and Pharell for collaborating with the retailer.


INTRO: The City of Cape Town says it's finalising security arrangements for this evening's Pharrell Williams concert at Grand West Casino. Thousands of pro-Palestinian supporters are expected to protest outside the venue ahead of the start of the event. Cindy Archillies reports.......

FOCUS: SASCO march on Stellenbosch protest against the language policy and lack of transformtaion. 


INTRO: The South African Students Congress will today lead a protest march to highlight the failure of Stellenbosch University to transfrom and implement its language policy. SASCO says it was promised an acceleration in the implementation of the policy by management last year, but this has not taken place. Cindy Archillies reports.......

FOCUS: Residents from South Road have applied for an interdict to stop the City of Cape Town from evicting them. 

 

INTRO:  The Cape Town High Court has granted an interdict forcing the City of Cape Town to comply with it's obligation to conduct a public participation process. This comes as 22 residents of Plumstead - known as the South Road Family Association - have approached the court over the expansion of the MyCiti bus system. Cindy Archillies reports ...

FOCUS: The University of the Western Cape's Department of Afrikaans is hosting a symposium discussing the contribution of black Afrikaans writers. 

 

INTRO:  A symposium hosted by the University of the Western Cape has heard that the majority of Afrikaans-speakers in the country are black. Despite challenges facing Afrikaans as a language, it is growing  - particularly among black and immigrant communities. Cindy Archillies reports... 

FOCUS: The Western Cape Directorate of Public Prosecutions is considering appealing a suspended sentence which was handed over to a child pornographer. 

 

INTRO: 37-year-old Andries Retief was given an eight year suspended sentence earlier this week in the Parow Regional Court.  His name has been added to the National Register for Sex Offenders. The sentence which is regarded by many as too light, has caused anger and public outcry for the case to be taken on appeal. Cindy Archillies reports... 

FOCUS: Residents from South Road in the Cape Peninsula have been fearing eviction as the City makes way for a new MyCiti Bus route. They have applied for an interdict to stop this process.

 

INTRO:  The Western Cape High Court has granted an urgent interdict to the South Road Residents Association against the City of Cape Town. INTRO:  Police are involved in a tense standoff with the community of Lavender Hill near Muizenberg. Angry community members are gathered outside  the home of a taxi driver who was shot dead together with his son earlier today in Seawinds. INTRO:  Two letters written by the late former president, Nelson Mandela, while he was in prison at Pollsmoor are on display at an exhibition in Cape Town. The exhibition forms part of a collection entitled The Road to Democracy. Cindy Archillies reports.....

INTRO: The University of Cape Town says it has signed an agreement with workers' union Nehawu on the in-sourcing of some of its services. Protesting workers are now expected to return to work in the next two days. Management yesterday agreed to the principle of in-sourcing some services following a council meeting. INTRO: The Western Cape Liquor Tribunal has cancelled the operating licence of Osi's Tavern in Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats. Eight girls died after a stampede in June. Cindy Archillies reports.....

FOCUS: Plastic pollution poses a dangerous threat to our oceans. The Race for Water Foundation would like to stop this problem before it becomes detrimental. 

 

INTRO: Scientists have warned that polluting the oceans with plastic and other waste material poses a danger to marine life and puts the human food chain at risk. The Race for Water Odyssey expedition is part of a UN-led initiative to raise awareness about the problem. The Race for Water Odyssey is currently visiting Cape Town to discuss ways to save the planet and sea life. Cindy Archillies reports... 

FOCUS: Update on the latest taxi violence in Vrygrond near Muizenburg. Two people were killed this morning. A tense stand off between police and law enforcement ensued. 

 

INTRO: Western Cape Minister for Transport, Donald Grant has appealed for calm in Vrygrond near Muizenberg, following ongoing taxi violence. A 59-year-old taxi driver and his son became the latest victims of taxi violence after they were shot dead on the corner of St Patrick and St Stevens Roads in Seawinds early this morning. INTRO: The Food and Allied Workers' Union (FAWU) in the Western Cape has signed an agreement with the Oceana Group not to close a fish factory in Hout Bay. The closure was on the cards after residents complained about the foul smell emanating from the factory. Cindy Archillies reports ..... 
 

INTRO: Calm has returned to the University of Cape Town after students earlier tried to disrupt the start of examinations. Undergraduates of Health Sciences are writing today with thousands more beginning their exams tomorrow. Entrances to the campus were earlier blocked but all barricades have since been removed. INTRO: The University of Cape Town has condemned acts of vandalism on the campus. Examinations have commenced peacefully at the university, despite fears of disruption.  A group of students who had been occupying the Bremner Buidling were also requested to vacate the premises. Cindy Archillies reports....

INTRO: The Council of Stellenbosch University says Afrikaans at the University will not be diluted if the language policy is changed. In a discussion document, Stellenbosch University says from next year, all learning at the institution will be facilitated in English, with Afrikaans and isiXhosa developed as academic languages. INTRO:  Students not writing their exams at the University of the Western Cape have been given until midday to vacate their residences. Management says this will allow for repairs and maintenance to continue on damaged infrastructure. Cindy Archillies reports.....

FOCUS: Original artefacts of the Titanic are on display in Cape Town . The exhibition of 140 pieces includes porcelain, shoes, a watch, toothbrush, parts of the ship and many more.

FOCUS: Following the Stellenbosch University Council's meeting yesterday which discussed - amongst others - the proposed language policy. The meeting ran late into the night. The council has decided to maintain the current language policy at the institution. 

 

INTRO: The Stellenbosch University Council has committed itself to multi-lingualism without exclusion. This after council agreed yesterday that equal status would be given to Afrikaans and English as languages of instruction. Open Stellenbosch and the SRC are unhappy over the decision. INTRO:  Open Stellenbosch says the Stellenbosch University Council is trying to safeguard the Afrikaans language. Yesterday's council meeting resolved that equal status should be given to both English and Afrikaans as languages of instruction as per the current language policy. FOCUS: A maintenance team of the Department of Public Works will depart from Cape Town on board the Antarctic research vessel SA Agulhas II this morning to renovate South Africa's research base in the polar region. The team of 32 members will remain at the SANAE IV base for two months to do maintenance and renovation.

FOCUS: Cape Town Tourism says it expects an increase in visitor numbers to the Mother City during the festive season.

FOCUS: Amnesty International has unveiled a giant Mandela memorial tapestry at Cape Town International Airport to mark international Human Rights Day.

FOCUS: Over 200 penguin chicks have been rescued by SANCOB after being abandoned in the wild. SANCOB is pleading for donations in order to rehabilitate the penguins for release. 


INTRO: The South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) has pleaded with the public for support during the penguin moulting season. Since October, 279 abandoned African penguin chicks have been admitted to SANCCOB seabird centre. Cindy Archillies reports ......
